silage fed adult cow with a head tilt/circling due to sensory & motor dysfunction of the trigeminal nerve
what clinical signs are associated with listeriosis?
asymmetric sensory loss on the face, weak jaw closure, head tilt to one side, & circling
what are the tests of choice for diagnosing listeriosis?
clinical signs & CSF analysis (mononuclear pleocytosis & increased protein)
how is listeriosis treated in cattle?
penicillin, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, & ampicillin for 2-4 weeks woth supportive care of iv fluids & dietary maintenance
what is the prognosis for listeriosis?
guarded to poor - poor if recumbent & can’t swallow, 50% is standing & can swallow
how is listeriosis prevented?
complete anaerobic rendering of silage!!!
