Flash Notes Miscellaneous - Colibacillosis Flashcards
what is the common case presentation of colibacillosis?
swollen, dying, recently weaned piglets
what is the number one colibacillosis disease in pigs?
edema disease - gut edema/bowel edema!!!
what is the classic case presentation of edema disease in pigs?
healthy, well conditioned 1-2 weeks after weaning, high protein diet/changes in diet , weaning, mixing pigs loss of intestinal milk antibodies, peracute death, CNS involvement, & periocular edema, swelling of the forehead, & submandibular region
what is the classic case presentation of enteric colibacillosis in pigs?
nursing/weanling pigs - profuse watery diarrhea, rapid dehydration, acidosis, & death
what is the classic case presentation of colisepticemia in calves & lambs?
calves less than 1 week old (more common in dairy calves), septic shock, collapse, recumbency, coma, & loose mucoid feces (usually not severe diarrhea)
what is the classic case presentation of poultry colibacillosis?
acute fatal septicemia & subacute pericarditis & airsacculitis
what is the test of choice for diagnosing colibacillosis diseases?
clinical signs, necropsy lesions, culture, PCR of specific pathogenic antigens
what is the treatment of choice for colibacillosis disease?
early use of abx, supportive care for septic shock - often ineffective
what is the prognosis of colibacillosis?
poor
what is the pathophysiology of edema disease in pigs?
hemolytic e. coli - f18 pili & shiga toxin - some pigs carry a specific mutation and are resistant to treatment
what causes enteric colibacillosis?
enterotoxigenic e. coli - K88 & 987P strains
what causes poultry colibacillosis?
usually non-hemolytic strains of e. coli
what are 4 predisposing factors for edema disease in newly-weaned pigs?
weaning, mixing pigs, changes in diet, loss of milk antibodies from intestine
