Transfer of skills Flashcards
What is positive transfer?
Helps/ aids the positive skills of another with the learning and performance of another skill
What is negative transfer?
The learning and performance of one skill hinders the learning and performance of another skill
Proactive transfer?
The learning and performance of a skill currently being learned is influenced by a skill already learned and may influence a skill yet to be learned. this might be positive/negative.
Retroactive transfer?
The learning and performance of a skill currently being learned influencing a skill already learned. This might be positive/negative
Whta is bi lateral transfer?
One side of the body to the other, which could be positive/negative.
When is positive transfer most likely to occur?
When two skilsl have similar movement patterns- one skill will help another
The practice environment is similar to the competition environment
The information processing requirements in practice are similar to the ones of the actual skills
Identical elements theory- The greater number of components of practice that are relevant to the real situation the greater chance of positive transfer occurring.
What is an example of a sport that has the same practice situation as in competition?
Hockey opposition 1v1, 2v2. Closed gymnastics.
“The closer the practice is to the real thing the better chance of positive transfer” an example would be?
Lay up in basketball/ playing golf on the course rather than practicing on the range
Sports that have had to ensure their skills have been well learnt ?
A gymnastics sommersault- due to high risk of danger
Demonstrations of sports that contain same transfer skills?
Chest pass in netball, chest pass in basketball (detect stimulus in environment and same movement)
Transferable elements of a previously learned skill example?
Bounce pass in netball/ bounce pass in basketball
When is negative transfer most likely to occur?
Performer misunderstanding the movements requireA familiar stimulus requiring a new response
different skills or movement patterns appear to be similar but arent
Conflicting skills are taught close together
When practice environment is different to competition environment
A previous skill or subroutine being learnt incorrectly
How can negative transfer be avoided?
Coaches should draw the attention of the performer to possible negative transfer to avoid the problem;
Basketball and netball
Coaches should avoid too many differing movement patterns that Could confuse performers during practice for example; serial skills such as gymnastics routine/ triple jump
Make practice sessions similar to the performance/ game situation (open/closed football game)
In bilateral transfer what is asymmetrical transfer training?
Practicing a skill with the preferred limb until it is over learnt and then practicing with the non-preferred limb. for example; football left and right
What is symmetrical transfer training?
Practicing a skill with both the preferred limb and non preferred limb at the same time eg. practice football left and right at the same time
