inverted u theory Flashcards
what is the inverted u theory?
as arousal increases so does quality of performance up to an optimum point, any subsequent increase in arosual will leas to a decrease
says it is a moderate arousal
What are the key points of inverted u theory?
Personlaity- extroverts prefer over aroused inironemnets
introverts- learn best at lower levels
gross/simple high arousal
fine/complex- low
stage of learnning-
level of expereince- high arousal- expereinced
low arousal0 novice
What are the effects of lower arousal
wider attneional field more likely to have incorrect selective attention
concentration is lost
not picking up relevant cues diverting baviour
no selective attention
information overloads
What are the effects of optimum arousal?
Pick up all the reliever cues- good selective attention
attentional field in the right frame of mind
preface state
concentrate filly
important cues absorbed
cue utlitisation- detection of most information important observed
What happens when performer is our aroused?
Selective attention decreases not piking up enough relevant cues- missing some stressed state of panic hypervigalnce concentration impeded attentional field narrows
what is under arousal?
The state of boredom
what is over arousal?
the state of hyper vigilance
What are the weaknesses of the imverted. theory??
Suggests it is at a moderate arousal but doesnt account for the differences in people and tasks
too simplistic
distribution is too even
doesn’t take into account catastrophe theory
doesn’t take into account recovery after arousal has happened
what is the shift on the invertd u theory?
It suggest as arousal increases so does the quality of performance at the same optimum moderate point same for the introvert and the extrovert
however the optimum level for introverts is at a lower levels than the extrovert
extrovert have more of a shift to the right than introvert
what is the shift for task difficulty?
complex skills are calmer as more deciisons
simple skills- more aroused, habitual need to be at higher arousal levels
what are the positives of inverted u theory?
more realistic than drive- optimum point true that most sports performers perform better at moderate simple good for coaches and teaches optimum rousal can shift
