What is the background?
Divided into 2 tier systems, upper class and lower class peasants. Class depended on sports you played
What did the lower class play?
Mob football, prize fighting
What did the upper class play?
Real tennis and hunting activities
What was mob football like?
Cruel, violent and dangerous as there were never rules. Played occasionally on feast and holy days
What was real tennis like?
Sophisticated as it had written rules, too place regularly, used expensive puporse built facilities
What were the differences in class for sports example cricket?
The peasants would bowl, the gentry would bat
prize fighting- peasants would fight the gentry would act as patrons
How did the social class effect their sports rules?
Lower class were poor and illiterate with very little time to play, upper class- wealthy and educated and had transport and more free time. Allowed them to develop more sophisticated activities
How did gender effect sport?
Sports were male-dominated. Limited for women as they had few rights
Why was there gender discrimination in sport?
Women were seen as the weaker sex and expected to behave in certain ways, actives were not too physically strenuous or dangerous . They participated in different sports to men
What would women take part in?
Peasant women would take part in smock racing at country wakes/ fairs Upper class women would participate in archery and horse riding
How did law and order effect social class?
no police Law was administered by land owners and upper class. Peasants had to obey their land owner

Peasants were more likely to be involved in violent sports; mob football and shin nicking, bare knuckle fighting
Cruel blood sports like animal baiting, bulls and badgers were regular occurrences
How did education and literacy effect social class?
Most peasants were illiterate, gentry went to public schools and universities
How did time effect social class and sports?
Seasonal time
