The respiratory system during exercise Flashcards
What detects the acidity level in the blood- lactic acid build up?
chemoreceptors, increase an acidity in blood
what happens when acidity levels have increased?
Chemoreceptors sent to inspiration control centre, increases inspiration
What happens when temperature increases?
The tehrmoreceptros notify the inspiratory control centre to increase inspiration
what stimulates a stretch in the lungs?
The baroreceptors detect a stretch in the lungs due to the increase of pressure surrounding them of the veins, tell the expiratory control system to increase expiration
whats the difference in exercise?
There is a high partial pressure of c02 diffusing into the alveoli
what is the bohrs shift?
Exercise means increasing c02 reducing the blood ph
this reduces the affinity (02, blood attract to haemoglobin) this means more 02 is released to the muscle cell, taking it as an advantage
what are the factors why the Bohr shift goes to the right?
The temperature
the increase of ph of the carbon dixodie- carbonic acid in the blood creates the ph to increase making it harder for oxygen to bind- releasing more oxygen
explain inspiration during exercise?- mechanics of breathing ?
Air moves from high to low partial pressure
the dispahram contacts with greater force
the external intercostals contract with greater force
also using the sternocleidomastoid
the rib cage moves up and out further
volume of the thoracic cavity increases more than rest
less pressure than at rest meaning o2 will come in
increased depth of breathing/increased volume of air inspired
how does the increase of respiration adapt to an endurance performer?
external intercostals will contract more, meaning an increase of diffusion gradient into the lungs from air- increases volume of thoracic cavity, decreasing the pressure more meaning more 02 is going into lungs
the pectorals minor assist to decrease pressure more to allow for more 02
the intercostals and thoracic cavity contract and decrease in volume to allow for an increase in pressure for more c02 to be expired out
expiration becomes an active process to increase breathing rate
greater volume in and out means increase of gases change allowing for more 02 to go to muscles and more c02 to be breathed out
what is the difference in gaseous exchange at rest and exercise?
During exercise theres a lower partial pressure of oxygen in the muscles than at rest and an increase of c02 in the muscles than at rest
steeper diffusion gradient which means more 02 is inspired and more c02 is expired than at rest. higher diffusion gradient
Bohr shift during exercise
hoembolibn due to increase of ph of c02 releases more oxygen to the muscles
