why is Doms a problem to the athlete?
Increases pain and decreases range of motion and decreases muscular power/stength and the ability to continue high quality training
What is the main factor that inmates Doms?
Eccentric muscle contraction is the primary factor inciting Doms
increase intensity and duration of eccentric ca increase Doms
How can an athlete decrease Doms?
Avoiding sudden increase in training volume and intenisty
maintaining good muscle flexiliiy
periodically complete bouts of eccentric work
warm up and gradual increase of intensity within training
What can well trained performers do?
Exercise at high intensity before muscle damage and at a reduced level of pain
recovery faster from Doms
What is the inhury>
Microscopic tears to muscle fibres
damage to muscle cell membrances
loss of muscle cell proteins/enxymes
What its he cause?
Increase of eccentric exercise (contraction)
due to a. sudden increase of overload of volume/intensity nd duation
start of training or muscle fatigue
What are the symptoms?
Increase of delayed pain, inflammation, stiffness and temperature
decreases of range of motion and decrease in max/peak strength
24-72 hours post exercise
What is the acute stage and sub acute of Doms?
Medical attention not required as should stop between 5-7 days cold therapy and nsaids to reduce swelling (post exercise and recovery massage and stretching hear nd contrast therapy nsaids if inflammation massage- friction return to movement gradually strengthen muscle over time
