What happened with gender equality?
gender equality became more friendly and all classes linked, class boundaries became more blurred which meant sport participation was easier and less divided Middle class started playing sports with the working class
What is social mobility?
rags-riches, celebrity footballers played as professionals and came from working class backgrounds
What was the middle class doing for social interaction?
middle class started playing sports like golf for social networking and status
Who is an example fo social mobility?
David Beckham, grew up in a working class background, through his career as a high profile and professional football he was a millionaire by the end of the 20th century
What was gender like in the 20th century?
Sport was still male dominated
What was the women role in the household?
expected to be the main carer and be a traditional house wife.
For the higher class and middle they had more free time so could participate in sport as they could hire nannies
WC didn’t have money so didn’t have any free time and had to be the main support for the children
What were society expectations for women?
neat, graceful, clean. This conflicted in many sports like football and rugby
What sports allowed women for expectations?
tennis and gymnastics
How was sport stereotypically masculine?
Women had to remain lady-like
Clothing had to be modest and had to wear clothing that didn’t show much flesh so difficult to move
Vigarous sport wasn’t encouraged as meant women couldn’t have children
Some exceptions like tennis and gymnastics , golf

The first marathon event women could compete in was the 1984 olympics, they had fewer events
Why was there lots of discrimination? with examples
there were only men golf clubs, FA banned women from playing football
How did it gender changed through the 20th century?
The impact of WW2 meant absence men (working in factories) women started doing mens jobs which gave people the view that women were more eligible to take part in sports
1960a onwards women liberation movement meant significant impact on sport
1980s- feminist movement equal pay. women level was worse (as men didn’t allow them to play)
1983- first women rugby union team
What is match fixing?
Definition:
- When a sports competition is played to a result that is partly or completely pre-
determined / when result is known in advance / when a player or team or official is
bribed to throw a match.
