Acute injuries Flashcards
What is an acute injury?
Resulting from a sudden there and then- an immediate onset, stress to the body; hit in rugby, heavy fall in volleyball, twisitng of an ankle
What is a soft tissue injury?
Damage to soft tissue/skin/ligaments, tendons, muscles, skin and internal organs
What are hard tissue injures?
damaged to hard tissue like the muscles cartilage, bone, joint
What is a fracture?
acute hard tissue injuries partial/complete break in a bones continuity
cause is of impact from a blow to a fall to a simple test, sudden muscle contraction/repettive abnormal stress
What are the types of fracture?
Closed, simple open/compound complete greenstick
What is a simple fracture?
Small bone damage and small soft tissue damage, skin remains unchanged
What is a compound fracture?
Bone comes through skin, risk of infection large soft tissue damage
What is a comminuted fracture?
multiple/3 more fragments of bone long rehabilitation ofter require screws or wires
What is a transverse fracture?
Break in a straight line/right angles; direct outside blow
What is a spiral fracture?
Break is s shaped causing one end fixed while other is twisted
What is an impacted fracture?
Both ends of bone compress against each other
What is an avulsion fracture?
Bone fragments becomes detached at an attatchemet site with a ligament or tendon
What is a depressed fracture?
Bone surface is flattened/depressed occurs in flat bones like the skull
What is a dislocation?
A hard tissue act, bones become separated by sudden impacts caused. Joint appears deformed/pain
What is a subluxation dislocation?
Partial dislocation with an incomplete separation between the articulating bones
