respiratory Flashcards
what is inspiration?
Breathing of air into
What is expiration?
Breathing air out of lungs
What is external respiration?
Gaserous exchange of 02 and c02 between the lungs and blood
What is internal respiration?
Exchange of 02 and c02 between the blood and. muscle/ organs
What is cellular respiration?
Occurs in the mitochondria where 02 is used to breakdown glucose into c02 and h20 during aerobic respiration
What muscles ae used in inspiration? (during exercise)
Sternocleidomastoid, scaliness
What muscles are used in inspiration in rest and exercise?
External intercostals and diaphragm
What muscles are used in expiration (only ever used in exercise)?
Intercostals external oblique internal oblique rectus abdomius transverse adbomins
What is the steps of mechanical breathing?
Muscled actively contract or passively relax to cause
movement of the ribs sternum and abdomen which causes
the thoracic cavity volume to either increase or decrease which in turn causes the
lung air pressure to either increase or decrease which causes
ipsiration or expiration
What happens to lung air pressure in inspiration relaxing?
Lung air pressure decreases, thoracic cavity increases
What happens in 02 transport?
97% if oxygen in red blood cells as haemoglobin (oxyhaemoglob)
3% blood plasma
What happens in c02 transport?
23% in haemoglobin as carbaminhaemoglin
7% dissolved in plasma
What does gaseous exchange rely on?
Relies on diffusion, gases move from an area of high to low pressure.
This is called the diffusion gradient
What is partial pressure?
The pressure a gas exerts within a mixture of gases
What is the partial pressure like with oxygenated blood?
High partial pressure 02 and low partial pressure c02
