Sports confidence Flashcards
What is confidence?
The belief or degree of certainty an individual possesses about their ability to be successful in sport
What are the performance positive impacts confidence has?
Performance (positive)
increased quality of performance due to increased participation and persistence
more motivated to achieve
firmer decision making leading to positive outcomes
What are the negative performance effects confidence can have on a performer?
Decreased quality of performance leading to learned helplenesses
What are the positives on participation?
Increased expectation of success and therefore more enjoyment and motivation
lack of inhibition around others
more able to engage in team activity
What are the negatives on participation?
Shying away from acitivies
avoiding competition
What is a performer’s self esteem?
The feeling of self worth that determines how valuable and competent we feel
Why is an increased of self esteem good for confidence?
Increased self esteem due to experiencing sucess
reduces anxiety
optimistic outlook
better body imag1e
What are the negative self esteem components?
depression
risk of eating disorders
non-participation
bullied
What are the features of vealy’s model?
Trait sports conifdence competitive orientation objective sports situation state sports confidence performance in sport subjective outcome
What is our sc trait?
Our confidence that is inherited or genetic
What is our competitive orientation?
the willingness of the performer to take on the current level of task/performance
What is the objective situation?/ behavioural reposes
The current situation we are in- penalty in football; the level of state sports confidence which dictates our performance
What is the states sports confidence?
the set belief in a specific sporting situation influenced by the sc trait and the competitive orientation; innate beliefs and are they competitive in that
What os the subjective outcome?
after the performance the performer will either feel satisfaction or disfaction which will lead to an increase or decrease in trait confidence and competitive orientation
What is the order of valleys model?
Objective stuation trait and competitive fed into state performance subjective then back to trait and competitive
What is self efficacy?
Situation specific confiendece, it is unstable (changeable)
What is bandoras theory of self efficacy?
Situation specific confidence it is unstale- changeable and varies from situation to situation
What are the 4 parts of bandoras models hat can effect our sports confidence?
Performance accomplishements
vicarious experience
verbal perusasion
emotional/physiological arousla
What are performance accomplishments in bandoras model?
Previous successes that can be used to increase self confidence and self efficacy, reminding them and praising them for their ability and effort (which are there in own control)
internal or controllable attributions also improve confidence
What are the vicarious experience in bandoras?
Watching someone of similar ability perform the skill can increase self efficacy; only works if someone of similar ability
What is the verbal persuasion fo bandoras model?
positive extrinsic feedback more likely to improve performance
What is the emotional/physiological arosual response?
understanding the signs of an increased arousal and knowing it won’t lead to failure and be controlled
What do all 4 factors of banduras model feed into?
The self efficacy bias
What is the self efficacy bias?
The expectation of the performer to achieve success
What is the athetoid performance that self efficacy bias feeds into?
Athletic performance, if 4 factors are high will improve overall self efficacy
What are the impact of sports confidence on self esteem?
improved self esteem
what are the impacts of high sports conifdence on participation?
more likely to take part and compete
more likely to try new roles
what impact does high confidence have on performance?
more likely to achieve positive outcomes
more likely to take risks
what is self efficacy?
the degree of belief we have in a certain sporting situation
what impact does low confidence have on performance?
Negative affect
can cause under achievement
what affect does low confidence have on participation?
Less likely to participate
not likely to try hard
unlikely to volunteer in actives and recognise talent
what is the affect of a low confidence on self esteem?
Creates lower self esteem
what is the veal’s model?
explores rh relationship between confidence and competitiveness
in vealys model if sc state is high what is more likely”
the performer is more likely yo have more conifdence
the behavioural response more likely to be more successful and the subjective outcome is more likely to increase satisfaction
what do the 4 bandora components link to?
Efficacy expectations- dictate
the expectation of the performer to achieve success
athletic performance improved as self efficacy is higher
