Atkinson and shiffren's multi store Memory models Flashcards
What is the atkinson and shiffrens multi store memory model?
Short term sensory storage- short term memory- long term memory
What is the short term sensory?
Stimuli enters the brain large storage capaity 0.25- 1 sec hold info uses selective attention to filter out information then goes to stm any other lost/forogtten umlimited capaicty all sensory information
What is the short term memory?
only receive selective attain info from short term sensory memory
5-9 items 7 items for
30 seconds
to extend the length of stm need repletion/chunking into large groups
if info rehearse enough pass to ltm “encoded:
other info not rehearsed lost or forgotten
the short term memory sends coded ifnroamtion to long term
encode some of the short term sensory through selectie attention
selective attention- occurs in sensory memory- from stss
relevant info is passed to sum
irrevelat is discarded
optimal level of arousal best stimuli, need good level of arousal
if info been rehersed- law od exercise then stored
further encoded into ltm
What is the ling term memory?
unlimitedcapaocty like stsm indefinite in duration- can decode into stm consider ltm as storage decoding and retrieval information is more retrievable if use it regularly
What are the advantages?
Simplifies the memory process to aid understanding
explains how individuals can deal with large info
explains ho1w those with brains damage can remember things from long ago rand not now
What are the disadvantages?
Too simple/not proven
separate parts
doesn’t effectively explain interaction between stm and ltm
doesn’t deal with levels of processing
what is the capacity for the short term sensory?
Large capavcity, 1/4 second then filtered
What is the capacity for the short term memory?
30 seconds, limit can only hold 7 items at a time
what is the capacity of the long term memory?
Limitless,
what are the a davdntages of this model?
its simple
it explains how we deal with large amounts of information- selective attention
those with specific brain injuries can still do certain things
someones long term might be memorable
explains how a performer can do something they haven’t done for a long time\
