catastrophe theory Flashcards
What is the catastrophe theory?
As somatic increases, the quality of performance improves but cognitive anxiety needs to be kept low for a performer to reach optimum performance. if high cognitive anxiety and high somatic, athlete will go beyond the optimum level of arosual- goes over the edge and performance drops
optimum arousal may be dangerous-
What what are the key points of catastrophe?
Not a smooth curve like eh u theory, drops massively
the drop depicts a performance rapidly dropping
after a catastrophe the performer can go back on the journey to upward threshold- reduce cognitive anxiety
debilitation in performance when low levels of physiological nd psyholoical levels of arousal happen
somatic low- sill and learning and performance can enchant if cognitive increases
what is somatic arousal?
Physical boy symptoms; tightness of the shoulders, churning stomach
what is cognitive arousal?
mental state, panic attacks
what happens if cognitive arousal seeks in?
The graph starts off with somatic arousal increasing having a positive effect, the drive to succeed; sweating then when cognitive aspects come in state of overthinking and worry after the optimum arousal there is a sudden crash- catastrophe
How does the graph say we recover?
If we reduce our cognitive symptoms we can reach a state of recovery by limiting worry
what are the positives?
realistic
suggests what happens in situations by going to pieces
it suggests what it needed for cognitive and somatic parts
includes recovery which can be seen in sport
most accepted
What are the negatives?
Not all performers will have a sudden decline- rare
optimum arousal may not be mid point- no shift for different people
doesn’t take into personality into account
