What was women’s role?

A

Women were expected to fulfil a traditional role (house wife, child carer). Working class had no free time, but higher and middle could afford a nanny so could participate and had free time. Women were seen as weaker sex

What was the expectation of women?

A

Traditional expectation of women behaviour and appearance, graceful, neat (contradicted with participation in rugby, football) however some sports like gymnastics and tennis were suitable. Pe in schools old introduced in 1918

Why was sport masculine?

A

Women were expected to behave in a lady like fashion, their clothing had to be modest and it was fdifficult to move as they couldn’t show much flesh and sport which was vigorous could have affected child bearing.Little media coverage of women sport.

Why were there fewer opportunities for women to compete?

A

Fewer events for women in the olympics, women didn’t take part in the marathon until 1984; discrimination against women (men only golf clubs) FA banning women from playing football in established football grounds

How did it progress through the 20th century?

A

Impact of ww2 and ww1- women took over mens jobs due to reduction in male population (nomination factories)
1960s women liberation movement, increased oppurnity in sport
1980s feminist movement- equal Pau and sports federation set up
