Structure of lymph node Flashcards
What is the capsule of the lymph node composed of?
Dense connective tissue.
What is the trabeculae of the lymph node?
Outer partitions of dense connective tissue
What are the sinuses of the lymph node?
Vessels where lymph travels through in the lymph node between the afferent and efferent lymph vessel.
How does lymph travel in the lymph node from afferent to efferent?
Subcapscular sinus -> trabecular sinus -> medullary sinus
Where are B cells located in the lymph node?
Found in the outer cortex and multiple B cells arranged into a nodule/follicle. Also found in the medulla
Which cells are present in the outer cortex of the lymph node?
B cells, macrophages and reticular cells which produce Type 3 collagen
Which cells are present in the paracortex?
T cell zone with highly CUBOIDAL endothelial venules.
How is the B cell follicle arranged?
Mantle zone where B cells are resting and darker due to chromatin being condensed and germinal centre which is lighter as cells are actively dividing. Germinal centre has a dark zone and light zone.
What is the composition of actively dividing cells?
Lighter when stained
What is the composition of resting cells?
Darker when stained due to condensation of chromatin.
What is the structure of the germinal centre?
Dark zone which is proximal to the T cell zone. Light zone is proximal to the Lymph node and contains B cells and T follicular helper cells.
What is the light zone of germinal center?
Light zone is proximal to the Lymph node and contains B cells and T follciular helper cells. It is the site of selection of high affinity clones
What is the dark zone of the germinal center?
Dark zone is proximal to the T cell zone and is the site of somatic hypermutation.
What cells are located in the inner cortex?
T cell zone with highly endothelial cuboidal venules
What is located in the medulla?
Medullary sinus and medullary cords. This has B cells, plasma cells and macrophages
