What is stigma?
A negative mark of a person as different based on social constructs.
What is the cognitive model of stigmatisation?
Based on lack of knowledge and due to stereotypes.
What is the emotional model of stigmatisation?
Based on fear and anxiety which creates prejudice.
What is the behavioural model of stigmatisation?
Final stage of stigmatisation where there is action towards those with the stigma such as exclusion and discrimination.
What is resistance?
Awareness of stigma and actively working against it or rejecting.
What is felt stigma?
Awareness of stigma but not personally applying it.
What is the impact of stigmatisation?
Labelling, othering and discrimination
What are spoilt self-identities?
When your image of your self identity is affected by a stigmatising attribute which you have.
What are the levels of stigma?
Individual, public and structural.
What is public stigma?
Individual stigma facillitated towards against a group of people like mental illness which includes both individual and personal stigma.
What is structural stigma?
Policies and law facillitate discrimination and stigma against a group of people.
How can those with spoiled self identities act?
You can attempt to pass, cover your stigma, withdraw from society, resistance against the stigma or internalise it,
What are the interventions for stigma?
Support education for families and carers, HCPs address biases and consider psychological impact of stigma and improve stigma literacy and normalise the stigma.
