Cells and Diseases Flashcards
What structure is cancer a disease of?
Disease of cells
What structure is virus a disease of?
Disease at the level of cells
How does aging affect the body?
Decline in organ function
How does bright field light microscopes view specimens?
Light is beamed through the transparent specimen, viewed using a dye. Low resolution so dense stain establishes specificity.
How does fluorescent light microscopy view specimens?
Flurorescent light is beamed through transparent specimen, viewed using a dye. It has a higher resolution than Bright field light but a dense stain is still required.
What does a TEM image show?
3D internal organelles
What does an SEM micrograph show?
2D external
What is the function of perixosomes?
Vesicles of proteolytic enzymes for pathogen defense
What is the cytoskeleton?
Filamentous network of microtubules and microfilaments and intermediate tubules which maintain cell shape, transport vesicles and aid in cell movement.
What are clarithins?
Protein coated vesicles which aid endocytosis. Forms a complex on the membrane for vesicle formation, which invaginates into the cell and clathrin performs endosome transfer
What is the RER?
unlocalised network of membranes that is the site of protein synthesis
What is the Golgi Apparatus?
unlocalised flatted discs of membrane called cisternae which modify and package proteins
