Plasma membrane Flashcards
What is the function of the membrane?
Receptor for cell signalling, physical barrier, exchange of molecules, maintain conc gradient, link cells via adhesion, fluid for molecule movement
How is it energetically stable and favourable?
Cylandrical structure due to phosphoilipid heads is arranged in a bilayer and due to appiathic nature, internally formed of hydrophobic fatty acyl tails
Why is it permeable?
C2 of acyl chain tail has an unsaturated bond in the cis 120 degree configuration, creating a chain kink that reduces bond strength.
How does membrane fluidity increase?
Double/unsaturated bonds, small phospholipid head, shorter acyl chain and headgroup charge, prescence of cholesterol
What is simple diffusion?
Passive movement of molecules down the conc gradient
How is glucose transported in intestinal cells?
Na+ uses GLUT1 transporter protein to move into intestinal cells. Glucose attaches and moves along to enter the cell.
What is symport transport?
Transport protein moves one cell along conc gradient and one cell against
What is uniport transport?
One molecule transported at a time
What does the H and V pump transport?
H+ ions
What does the P pump transport?
