What are the difficulties in measuring mental health?
Co-morbidities such as the impact of chronic illness that it is difficult to identify the progenitor

Subjective assessment by the patient may withhold important information
How are mental health problems assessed and monitored?
Taking history
Examination of patient
Using tools like GADS or PHQ
Asking screening questions for specific disorders

Secondary care: HADS
What are the assessment tools for anxiety?

What is DSM-V used for?
To classify mental health problems such as schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, personality disorders
What is the prevalence of depression in the population?
More common in women than men, including severe depression. Affects younger women and older men within each sex. Depression is generally a co-morbidity with other conditions.
What is the prevalence of CMD in the population?
Common mental disorders- greater in the working age population. Greater in the South West, London and West Midlands. Greatest number of sucicides are men.
What is the prevalence of anxiety in the population?
Greater in younger women than men, and those of working age
What is the adult psychiatric morbidity survey?
Household survey where clinical interview model was used to assess for CMD. Provides data on prevalence of conditions.
How do mental health problems relate to primary care?
Majority of CMD in the population is managed in primary care through opportunistic testing for screening questions.
What is the relation between mental health and secondary healthcare?
Receive referral from primary care. It includes:
Crisis resolution team
Early intervention team
Psychological wellbeing service
Community Mental Health teams
What is the clinical stepped model?
Model which clinicians use to determine the treatment required for the level of a patient’s care to deliver the best cost-effective and intense treatment.
