Muscles To Know (Part 1) Flashcards
Where would you find external intercostals?
Between the ribs
What do external intercostals do?
Elevates rib cage when inhaling
Where would you find internal intercostals?
In between the ribs with external intercostals lateral and the sternum medial
What do internal intercostals do?
During forceful exhalation (eg. coughing) it depresses and retracts the ribs
What major role does the diaphragm take part in?
Respiration
What does contraction of the diaphragm mean?
Increase in volume of the thoracic cavity
- air is pulled into lungs
Where would you find external obliques?
Most outer abdominal muscles
- can see them (superficial)
Where would you find internal obliques?
Below the external abdominal muscle
What do the abdominal oblique muscles allow? (3)
- Twists
- Side bends
- Sit ups
Where would you find the transverse abdomen muscle?
Below the obliques muscles
- inner most
What does the transverse abdominis help with? (3)
- Compress the ribs and viscera
- Forced expiration
- Bowl movements
Where would you find the rectus abdominis?
Runs vertically along the abdominal wall
What is the rectus abdominus important for?
Postural muscles
What does the rectus abdominus allow? (3)
- Flexing of the lumbar spine
- crunches - Forceful respiration
- Compression
Where would you find the sternocleidomastoid?
Runs obliquely across the side of the neck
