A&P - Chapter 24 (Part 1) Flashcards
Sense of smell
Olfaction
What is the receptor involved with olfaction?
Chemoreceptors
What is the name of the chemoreceptors involved in olfaction?
Olfactory receptors
Where are the olfactory receptors for the olfactory nerves located?
In a small area of epithelial tissue in the upper part of the nasal cavity
Where are special cilia located for the olfactory?
On olfactory sensory neurons that touch the olfactory epithelium are able to sense different chemicals
How do chemoreceptors for the olfactory system work? (2)
- A chemical message generates a nerve impulse that travels through the olfactory nerves
- The nerve impulse enters the thalamus for relay to the olfactory centres in the cortex for interpretation
What is a characteristic of olfactory receptors?
They are extremely sensitive
- easily fatigue (adapt)
What are chemoreceptors for taste called?
Gustatory cells
Where are gustatory cells located?
In the taste buds
What are gustatory cells stimulated by?
Chemicals dissolved in the saliva
What do taste buds respond to?
The five primary sensations
What are the 5 primary sensations?
- Sour
- Sweet
- Bitter
- Salty
- Umami
What differs in each of the primary taste sensations? (2)
- Adaptations
2. Sensitivity threshold
What interferes with the stimulation of olfactory receptors?
Nasal congestion
What does nasal congestion result in?
Dull taste sensations
What senses work together for taste? (2)
- Gustatory senses
- taste - Olfactory senses
- smell
What 2 cranial nerves carry gustatory impulses?
- 7
- facial - 9
- glossopharygeal
Where do cranial nerves 7 and 9 carry gustatory impulses to? (3)
- The medulla oblongata
- Thalamus
- Gustatory area of the cerebral cortex
- in the parietal lobe of the brain
What are the functions of the ear? (2)
- Hearing
2. Equilibrium/balance
What receptors are involved with the ear?
Mechanoreceptors
How many divisions are there for the ear?
3
What are the 3 divisions of the ear?
- External ear
- Middle ear
- Inner ear
How many divisions does the external ear have?
2
What are the 2 divisions of the external ear?
- Auricle or pinna
2. External meatus
Auricle or pinna
The visible portion of the ear
External acoustic meatus (canal)
Tube leading from the auricle into the temporal bone and ending at the tympanic membrane (ear drum)
What does the external acoustic meatus contain?
The ceruminous glands
