A&P - Chapter 10 (Part 5) Flashcards
What are 2 causes of skin cancer?
- Genetic
- Environmental
- excessive exposure to UV radiation
What is the most common form of cancer?
Skin cancer
What are 3 common types of skin cancer?
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Malignant melanoma
What 2 types of skin cancers account for 95% of skin cancers?
- Squamous cell carcinoma
2. Basal cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma (4)
- Slow growing
- Malignant tumour of epidermis
- First appear as hard, raised nodules
- If left untreated, it will grow and metastasize
What is the most common type of skin cancer?
Basal cell carcinoma
Basal cell carcinoma (3)
- Usually appear on upper face
- Least likely to metastasize
- Small, raised lesion
- erodes in the centre, forming a bleeding crusted crater
Why does basal cell carcinoma occur mostly on the upper face?
Because your face as more exposure yo the sun than any other part
What is the most serious form of skin cancer?
Malignant melanoma
Malignant melanoma (3)
- Can develop from a benign pigmented mole
- Develops into a dark, spreading, cancerous lesion
- Risk is significantly higher is two blistering sunburns before the age of 20
What are the warning signs for malignant melanoma?
ABCDE
What does ABCDE stand for?
A = asymmetry B = border (irregular) C = colour (uneven) D = diameter (>6mm) E = evolving (any changes)
What is one of the most serious and frequent problems affecting the skin?
Burns
What are 4 causes of burns?
- Sunburn
- Chemicals/Acids
- Electricity
- Friction
What 2 things does treatment and survival depend on?
- Total area involved
2. Severity or depth of burn
What is the body surface area estimated using?
The rule of nines
- in adults
What is the rule of nines?
Body surface areas are divided into 11 areas of 9%
- additional 1% around the genitals
What are 3 types of burns you can get?
- First degree burns
- Second degree burns
- Third degree burns
What do first degree burns involve?
Only surface layers of the epidermis
What kind of damage is caused by first degree burns?
Minimal damage
- peeling and blisters
What do second degree burns involve?
Deep epidermal layers
What do second degree burns always do?
Cause injury to the upper layers of the dermis
What symptoms come from second degree burns? (4)
- Severe pain
- Swelling
- Blisters
- Scarring
What do third degree burns involve?
Complete destruction of the epidermis and dermis
- may involve underlying muscles and bone
Do you feel pain in third degree burns? Why or why not?
- No
- You burnt off the nerve endings in the second degree burn so you no longer have sensations
- this is initially but intense pain eventually follows
What is loss in third degree burns?
Serious fluid
What does the loss of fluid in third degree burn increase?
The risk of infection
