A&P - Chapter 12 (Part 2) Flashcards
What are the 5 regions of vertebrae?
- Cervical
- Thoracic
- Lumbar
- Sacrum
- Coccyx
What does curvature of the spine give?
Strength to support the body, which allows us to stand and walk
How many vertebrae are in the cervical region?
7 (C1-C7)
How many vertebrae are in the thoracic region?
12 (T10-T12)
How many vertebrae are in the lumbar region?
5 (L1-L5)
How many vertebrae are in the sacrum region?
5 (S1-S5)
How many vertebrae are in the coccyx region?
2-3
- fused bones to make the tailbone
Why is the vertebrae stacked in a special way?
To give the spine flexibility and strength
What do vertebrae play an important role in?
Controlling the movement of the spine
What do all vertebrae have?
A foramen
Foramen
Hole in the vertebrae that the spinal cord can pass through
What does C2 have?
An upward projection
What does the upward projection in C2 allow?
Rotation of the head
What do vertebrae attach to?
Each other
What do thoracic vertebrae attach onto?
With the ribs
As a whole, what does the vertebral column attach onto? (3)
- Head
- Ribs
- Iliac bones
What 3 bones make up the thorax?
- Vertebral column
- Sternum
- Ribs
What is the shape of the sternum?
Dagger shaped
Where is the sternum located?
In the middle of the chest
What 3 parts make up the sternum?
- Manubrium
- Body
- Xiphoid process
What does the manubrium attach with? (2)
- Clavicle
2. 1st rib
How do ribs attach to the body of the sternum?
Through coastal cartilage
- directly or indirectly
What direction does each pair of ribs attach to the thoracic vertebrae?
Posteriorly
- all but 2
What do the lowest 2 rib pairs attach anteriorly to?
Sternum
What do the 8th, 9th, 10th pairs of ribs attach to?
The cartilage of the 7th rib
What is the 7th rib considered?
Fasle rib
What do the 11th and 12th ribs attach onto?
No costal cartilage
What are the 11th and 12th ribs considered?
To be floating ribs
