A&P - Chapter 11 (Part 2) Flashcards
What are 6 parts of the long bone?
- Diaphysis
- Epiphyses
- Articular cartilage
- Periosteum
- Medullary cavity
- Endosteum
What is the diaphysis of the bone?
The shaft
- the long part
What are 4 characteristics of the diaphysis bone?
- Hollow tube
- Hard compact bone
- Strong
- Light
Where would you find epiphyses of the bone?
The ends
- on the sides
What does epiphyses bone contain?
Spongy bone
What does spongy bone contain?
Red bone marrow
What does epiphyses bone do? (2)
- Provides attachment for muscles
2. Stability to joints
Where do you find articular cartilage?
Top/bottom of the bone
What is articular cartilage?
A thin layer of cartilage that covers each end of the bone
What does articular cartilage act as?
A cushion
Where is periosteum located?
It is a strong/fibrous membrane that covers the bone
- just the shaft and not the joints
What does the periosteum do?
It attaches tendons to bones
What does periosteum contain? (3)
- Osteoblasts
- Osteoclasts
- Blood vessels
What is periosteum essential for? (2)
- Bone cell formation
2. Survival
What is damaged if you have arthritis?
Cartilage
- and its hard to repair
When things attach to the bone, what are they physically attaching to?
The periosteum
What does the periosteum feel?
Sensation
What happens if the periosteum is froze/paralyzed?
You dont feel anything
Where is the medullary cavity located?
It is a tube-like hollow area inside the diaphysis
What is the medullary cavity filled with in adults?
Yellow marrow
What is yellow marrow?
Fat
What is the endosteum?
A thin fibrous membrane
What does the endosteum do?
It lines the medullary cavity
What does the endosteum contain?
Various types of bone cells
What does yellow marrow prevent us from doing?
Creating blood cells
- only red marrow can do that
