A&P - Chapter 18 (Part 1) Flashcards
What system does the nervous system work with?
Endocrine system
What is the main function of the nervous system?
Communication
What 3 things make up the nervous system?
- Brain
- Spinal cord
- Nerves
What are 2 types of nerves?
- Cranial
2. Spinal
What 2 systems make up the nervous system?
- Central nervous system
- CNS - Peripheral nervous system
- PNS
What 2 structures make up the CNS?
- Brain
2. Spinal cord
Where is the CNS located?
Centrally
What is the CNS considered?
The structural and functional centre of the entire nervous system
What does the CNS have? (2)
- Integrative centre
2. Control centre
What does the control centre do? (2)
- Interprets incoming information
- sensory - Initiates an outgoing response
Where is the PNS located?
Extends to the peripheral parts of the body
What does the PNS do?
Communicates between the CNS and the rest of the body
Afferent
Signals to the body
Efferent
Signals away from the body
What 2 parts make up the somatic integration center?
- Somatic sensory division
- afferent (simulus) - Somatic motor division
- efferent (response)
What 2 nerves make up the PNS?`
- Somatic
2. Autonomic
What 3 parts make up the autonomic nervous system?
- Visceral sensory
- afferent (simulus) - Sympathetic division
- efferent (response) - Parasympathetic division
- efferent (response)
What are 3 examples of autonomic effectors?
- Cardiac/smooth muscles
- Glands
- Adipose tissue
Somatic
Communication between CNS and skeletal muscles
Autonomic
Communication between CNS and visceral effectors
Sympathetic
Flight or flight
- stress response activities
Parasympathetic
Rest and repair
- normal resting activities
What happens during sympathetic responses? (5)
- Pupils dilate
- get bigger - Blood rushes to the core
- constrict - Heart beats faster
- Decrease movement in the bowel
- Increase blood pressure
What happens during parasympathetic response?(4)
- Blood circulates around the body
- Heart beat is normal
- Increase movement in bowl and in glands
- Decreases blood pressure
