- AVA status granted in 1983
- Vineyards must be located at 1400 feet above sea level to gain AVA status. This known as the fog line. Above this elevation vineyards have almost unmitigated access to sunshine
- Poor thin rocky volcanic soils
- Cooler daytime temps than the valley floor with a smaller diurnal shift. Resulting wines are quite tannic, powerful and ageworthy
