A
  • AVA status granted in 1983
  • Vineyards must be located at 1400 feet above sea level to gain AVA status. This known as the fog line. Above this elevation vineyards have almost unmitigated access to sunshine
  • Poor thin rocky volcanic soils
  • Cooler daytime temps than the valley floor with a smaller diurnal shift. Resulting wines are quite tannic, powerful and ageworthy

  • Cab Sauv is king. Historically supple texture, smooth tannins and firm acidity. Today harder to define.

Characteristics of the Rutherford AVA

A

AVA Status granted in 1993

  • The area takes its name from Thomas Rutherford, who married George Yount’s granddaughter in 1864 and was given over 1,000 acres of land as part of her dowry
  • Located between St Helena and Oakville it occupies the widest stretch of the Valley
  • Napa River runs through the centre and there is a large alluvial fan.
  • Many great wines come from the Rutherford Bench home to
  • Cab sauv in a range of styles from balanced and perfumed to super opulent. Sauv Blanc Chardonnay and Zinfandel are also popular
  • Wines are considered slightly earthier in style, which may be what André Tchelistcheff meant when he called them “dusty.”

  • Transition point between the more sedimentary peaks to the south and the more volcanic mountains in the north
  • The thick presence of forest and the springs throughout the mountain give the area its name and personality,

  • Cabernet is important but less dominant than in other appellations. Chardonnay, Sauv Blanc, Rielsing, Syrah, Zinfandel and even Pinot noir and port varieties are compelling

  • Yountville is named for George C. Yount, who planted Napa’s first vinifera vines inside the appellation in 1838 and 1839
  • Yountville is quite bumpy and the knolls have a major influence on microclimates
  • Relatively cool growing area often shrouded in fog
  • Finessed and silky Merlot
  • Cab Sauv is very elegant with gentle tannins, firm acidity and fresh black fruit

  • The only valley to the east of Napa that can claim it’s own AVA
  • Almost no maritime influence however elevation mitigates the heat
  • Reputation for cheap and easy fruit but there are a couple of quality producers
  • Much left to be dicovered

  • Soils are rocky and poor with a high volcanic content
  • Fog has a distinct cooling effect here

  • Poor Volcanic soils, above the fog line so a healthy exposure to the sun and a moderating influence from Lake Hennesey
  • Wines are ripe and powerful made primarily from Cabernet but also other bordeaux varieties, Syrah and Zinfandel
