The Mount Lofty Ranges begin in Southern Fleurieu, traveling north through the Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, and Clare Valley, transitioning into the Flinders Ranges in the Far North. The Murray R. emerges from the east NSW/Victoria border in Lower Murray, twists through Riverland, turns south and exits into Lake Alexandrina, which borders Langhorne Creek and Currency Creek. The Spencer Gulf separates the Southern Eyre Peninsula (west) and the Yorke Peninsula.

Q

South Australia history and and current role in AU WIne

A

Small wine growing region starting in the early 1800’s. Avoided phylloxera when in arrived in Victoria by issuing a ban on imported vine material in 1874. Usurped Victoria’s position as top producing state after it was decimated by Phylloxera. Futhered It’s dominance in 1901 when interstate trade tariffs were lifted and it’s wines could flood the populated markets of NSW and Victoria at competitive prices. Dominance continued as irrigation arrived in Riverland and production soared. 3/4 of production in the 1940’s, ~ 50% today Victoria and NSW have become resurgent. Many of the big Wine Groups are head-quarted here
