यदिवेतरच्च (?)
यदिवेतरच्च = यद् इव इतरत् च = ‘and what, as it were, another thing’
I DON’T REALLY UNDERSTAND THE MEANING HERE. VIRTUALLY THE SAME VERSE OCCURS EARLIER AT B&K II+III P. 18.17, WHERE THEY HAVE A NOTE TRANSLATING IT. BUT THE PROBLEMATIC WORDS HERE - यदिवेतरच्च - ARE DIFFERENT THERE:
त्वशुभं शुभं वा
- WHICH IS MUCH CLEARER. I AM STILL NOT SURE WHAT यदिवेतरच्च IS SUPPOSED TO MEAN.
\
ACTUALLY, I THINK NOW IT IS THE SAME AS त्वशुभं शुभं वा - VIZ. पुम्सोन्यजन्मसुकृतं यदिवेतरच्च =>
“the good done by a man in another lifetime and that which is, as it were, the other (i.e. BAD)”
THAT’S ALL IT IS. (I THINK.) इव IS A LITTLE STRANGE HERE - UNLESS IT’S JUST METRI GRATIA.

अनयो नयसंकाशो
अनयो नयसंकाशो == अनयः नयसंकाशः == ‘bad planning that looks like good planning’ (i.e. the state of ἄτη that characterizes those whose wits the gods have stolen)
\
अनय m.== अ + नय m. ==> ‘bad management, bad planning, bad conduct’
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
AT FIRST I DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS COUPLET - AND SO CAME UP WITH THE FOLLOWING CONFUSION:
\
अनयोः LOC DUAL NEUTER (PICKING UP A FEM SG + A MASC SG.) RESUMES THE TWO LOC ABSOLUTES OF THE PREVIOUS LINE, THE REFERENCE BEING TO “THE WISE/GOOD MAN”:
“in the case of either/both of these problems occurring (muddled head, present disaster), the presence/appearance of wisdom/good conduct/plan does not slip away from his heart”
I.E. THE GOOD MAN KEEPS HIS HEAD IN THE MIDST OF DISASTER.
\
THE SENTIMENT OF THIS COUPLET #184 IS VERY MUCH THE SAME AS THAT OF #176 AT THE TOP OF THE PRECEDING PAGE (P. 73)..
(STRANGE THAT B&K CITE THE LATIN QUOTATION “Quem deus uult perdere, prius dementat.” APROPOS OF VERSE #184, WHICH HAS THE OPPOSITE SENTIMENT - OR RATHER THE REVERSE EXPRESSION OF THE SAME IDEA. BUT IT IS VERY APPLICABLE TO ##182-183 HERE.)

विघ्नविहत adj.
विघ्नविहत adj. HERE SEEMS LIKELY TO MEAN “assailed/afflicted/impeded/thwarted (विहत PPP <= वि +√हन्) by obstacles/difficulties (विघ्न)” AND YET विहत PPP <= वि +√हन् OFTEN HAS THE MEANING OF ‘ward(ed) off, repelled’ SO THERE IS A CHANCE HERE THAT THE MEANING COULD BE “middling persons give up after overcoming (just one or a few) obstacle(s) [IN CONTRAST TO THE THOUSANDS MENTIONED IN THE NEXT LINE AS BEING OVERCOME BY SUPERIOR PERSONS]”
\
vihata विहत p. p. 1 Struck completely, killed. -2 Hurt. -3 Opposed, impeded, resisted. -तः A Jaina temple.
