कुलाय n.

A

कुलाय n. (in later language also as- m. etc.) a woven texture, web, nest (of a bird) , case or investing integument, receptacle, home
\
NOTE THE SYNTAX OF THE WHOLE CLAUSE - WHEREIN YOU MUST KEEP IN MIND THAT कुलायम् == Sthirajīvin’s NEST AND NOT THE ENTIRE OWL’S NEST:
एष कुलायमस्मद् द्योतनाय वृद्धिम् नयति ।
- HERE, WHEREIN कुलायम् … वृद्धिम् नयति == ‘he is building (HIS) nest - AND -
अस्मद् द्योतनाय == ‘for the enkindling (burning up) of us’ (WHERE अस्मद्-द्योतनाय IS A SINGLE COMPOUND WORD).. THERE IS NOTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THIS SYNTAX. IT IS ABSOLUTELY STANDARD - AS IS THE FACT THAT THIS BIT OF INDIRECT SPEECH DESCRIBING WHAT THE STUPID OWLS ARE *NOT THINKING IS PRESENTED AS DIRECT SPEECH - AS WHAT THE OWLS WOULD ACTUALLY SAY IF THEY REALIZED WHAT THE CROW WAS DOING

संजातेन्धताम्

A

संजातेन्धताम् == संजातेऽन्धताम् == संजाते + अन्धताम्
WITH संजाते GOING WITH THE PRECEDING सूर्योदये (‘with daybreak having arrived’) AND अन्धताम् BEING THE D.O. OF THE PPL IN THE FOLLOWING LOC. ABS.प्राप्तेषूलुकेषु (‘with the owls having achieved blindness’)
\
SO ALL OF YOUR PREVIOUS CONFUSION (BELOW) WAS DUE TO NOT SEEING THAT संजातेन्धताम् == संजातेऽन्धताम् HERE
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\
THE FOLLOWING REPRESENTS MY INITIAL CONFUSION HERE:
\
THIS IS A TYPO FOR THE CORRECT READING, WHICH IS संजातान्धताम् -
संजातेन्धताम् IS AN EGREGIOUS MISTAKE/CORRUPTION HERE, INTERPOLATED FROM THE WIDER SENSE OF THE PASSAGE, WHICH IT ANTICIPATES. IT WOULD HAVE TO MEAN ‘WITH THE OWLS HAVING ACHIEVED (प्रप्तेषु + उलूकेषु) AN IGNITED CONFLAGRATION’ (AS IF FROM इन्धता f. - WHICH IS [ND]). BUT THE WAY THE PASSAGE CONTINUES SHOWS THAT THE FIRE HAS NOT BEEN LIT YET. THE POINT HERE IS INSTEAD THAT THE OWLS ‘HAVE ACHIEVED INITATED (DAY-)BLINDNESS’ (संजातान्धताम्) NOW THAT THE SUN HAS COME UP.

(तद् ) गृहायातस्ते हतशत्रोः

A

ACTUALLY, I THINK आयातः HERE IS MUCH MORE LIKELY NOM. SG. M. OF THE PPP. OF √या REFERRING TO Sthirajīvin HIMSELF - “I, having returned home, will tell YOU’ - SINCE I AM NOT SURE I HAVE EVER SEEN THE ACTIVE PRESENT PPL. OF √या - WHICH WOULD IN ANY CASE GIVE THE WRONG ASPECT HERE. HE WON’T TELL THE KING AS THE KING IS COMING BACK HOME. RATHER HE WILL TELL THE KING AFTER HE HIMSELF (ALONG WITH THE KING AND EVERYONE ELSE) HAS COME HOME.
/
AT FIRST I THOUGHT THUS:
( तद् ) गृहायातस्ते हतशत्रोः IS ALL GENITIVE INDIRECT OBJECT (GEN. PRO DAT.) = तत् गृह+आयातः ते हत+शत्रोः = ‘So, to you, returning home (PR ACT PPL IC), possessed of having-been-killed-enemies (BV), (… I will explain)’
