What specific information do we need when someone calls in suspicious activity/person/ vehicle? Why is it suspicious?
Phone #, caller name & location, location of situation, what is the complaint on the activity/person/vehicle, description.
List 5 questions to ask as to why the situation is suspicious?
Are they acting erratically, making threatening gestures or remarks that alarms you, do they appear physically ill, have you seen the person/vehicle before, do you believe they are about to commit a crime.
If the complainant can not give you this information, what should you do?
Dispatch should pull up the camera if it is in an area you can see. Watch to see if it warrants an officer being sent. If it is an area with camera footage, dispatch 1 officer for surveillance and they can determine if the behavior warrants contact.
How many officers should you send if there is no camera footage?
Send 2 officers.
Should you keep the caller on the line?
Keep the caller on the line if it is occurring now and they do not feel safe. Continue to pass information on to officers as you get it.
