BOTH B&K AND JHA READ THIS WORD HERE AND JHA DUTIFULLY TRANSLATES IT TO INDICATE THAT THEY HIDE THE JEWELS IN THEIR ‘THIGHS’ (BY HAVING THEM OPERATED UPON) – BUT THIS SEEMS VERY UNLIKELY COMPARED TO HAVING THEM JUST SWALLOW THEM RIGHT BEFORE CAPTURE AS IN OTHER VERSIONS. SO IT SEEMS LIKE WORDS FOR “BELLY” AND “CALF OF THE LEG” HAVE SOMEHOW BEEN CONFUSED HERE.

(REMEMBER that there is a passage in one of the upanishads (?) OR MORE LIKELY IN ONE OF THE VEDIC HYMNS IN LANMAN OR MACDONELL where the calf of a god’s (Indra’s ?) leg is used as a uterus for the gestation of another god – based on a phrase for ‘calf of the leg’ that means ‘belly of the leg’? The confusion/conflation here must come from that idea.)
