Muscles of the Foot. Flashcards
What is the innervation to the muscles of the foot?
Tibial nerve, from branches of the medial and lateral plantar nerves.
Which muscles of the foot are the only ones to be innervated by medial plantar nerve?
Abductor hallucis
Flexor digitorum brevis
Flexor hallucis brevis
1st lumbricle
Which muscles of the foot are not innervated by the tibial nerve?
Extensor digitorum brevis, extensor hallucis brevis which are extrinsic muscles of the anterior leg compartment
-> Innervated by the deep fibular nerve.
What are the groups of foot muscles?
Extrinsic muscles of the foot which arises from the compartments of the leg for foot eversion, inversion, dorsiflexion and plantarflexion.
Intrinisic muscles of the foot which are contained only in the foot for fine motor movements of toe.
What are the types of intrinsic foot muscles?
Dorsal group muscles and plantar group muscles.
What are the dorsal intrinsic muscles of the foot?
On the dorsal aspect of the foot for extension.
Extensor hallucis brevis
Extensor digitorum brevis.
Extrinsic muscles would cause dorsiflexion.
What is the course of the extensor digitorum brevis?
Arises from the calcaenus and inferior extensor retinaculum to insert onto the toe 2, 3 and 4 for toe extension, laterally to the slip of the extensor digitorum longus,
What are the layers of the muscles of the plantar aspect?
Plantar aspect is responsible for:
Flexion of toes via intrinsic muscles which contains 4 layers.
Plantar flexion via extrinsic muscles.
Which muscles are present in the 1st layer of the plantar aspect of the foot?
Abductor hallucis innervated by medial plantar nerve
Abductor digit minimi innervated by lateral plantar nerve
Flexor digitorum brevis innervated by medial plantar nerve
Which muscles are present in the 2nd layer of the plantar aspect of the foot?
2 intrinsic muscles only
Quadratus plantae
Lumbricals
(Extrinsic muscles are the flexor digitorum longus and flexor hallucis longus)
Which muscles are present in the 3rd layer of the plantar aspect of the foot?
3 muscles:
Flexor hallucis brevis
Flexor digit minimi brevis
Adductor hallucis (oblique and transverse head)
Which muscles are present in the 4th layer of the plantar aspect of the foot?
Interossei muscles
Dorsal interossei muscles
Plantar interossei muscles
What is the course of the flexor digitorum brevis?
Arises from the calcaenus to bifurcate and attach laterally to the toes and allows the flexor digitorum longus to attach. It is innervated by the medial plantar nerve.
What is the course of the abductor hallucis?
Arises from the calcaenus and flexor retinaculum to attach to the base of the 1st phalange for flexion of the MCP joint for abduction and flexion of the 1st toe. It is innervated by the medial plantar nerve.
What is the course of the abductor digit minimi?
Arises from the medial and lateral aspects of the calcaenus to attach to the base of the 5th toe for abduction and flexion of the toe.
Innervated by the lateral plantar nerve.
