Blood Supply To Lower Limb Flashcards
What are the branches of the abdominal aorta?
Common iliac which splits into an internal and external iliac.
What does the internal iliac give off?
Superior gluteal artery
Inferior gluteal Artery
Obturator internus artery
Vesicle arteries to bladder
What does the external iliac artery give off?
Becomes the common femoral artery once it passes the boundary of the inguinal ligament.
What does the femoral artery give rise to?
→ profounda femoris artery which gives off a medial and lateral circumflex artery
→ Continues as the superficial femoral artery which travels superficially to the thigh muscles and ends once it passes the adductor hiatus to travel Posteriorly as the popliteal artery
What is the continuation of the superficial femoral artery?
Becomes popliteal artery once it travels through the adductor hiatus and split into A
→ anterior tibial artery for anterior leg compartment
→ posterior tibial artery for posterior leg compartment
→ Fibular artery for the lateral leg compartment
Which artery gives off branches to supply the knee?
Popliteal artery gives off the geniculate arteries.
What is the course for the anterior tibial artery?
Passes anteriorly via gap between the tibia and fibula and becomes the dorsalis pedis artery in the foot.
What is the course for the posterior tibial artery?
Travels to enter the foot in the tarsal tunnel behind the medial malleolus and splits into:
→ medial plantar artery
→ lateral plantar artery
What is the artery between the 1st and 2nd toe?
Dorsalis pedis gives off a branch called the deep plantar artery which joins the plantar arteries on the plantar aspect to form the deep plantar arterial arch.
Where does the greater sapphenous vein drain?
Femoral vein and it travels anterior to medial malleolus.
Where does the lesser sapphenous vein drain?
Popliteal fossa and it travels posterior to lateral malleolus.
What are the boundaries of the adductor canal?
Laterally: Vastus medialis
Posteriorly: Adductor longus and Magnus
Anterio-medially: sartorius
What are the boundaries of the popliteal fossa?
SuperoMEDIALLY: Semimembranousus and semitendinosus
InferoMEDIALLY: Gastrocnemius
SuperoLATERLLY: Biceps femoris
InferioLATERALLY: Gastrocnemius
What are the contents of the popliteal fossa?
Popliteal artery
Popliteal vein
Sciatic nerve which splits into:
Tibial nerve
Common fibular nerve
What are the contents of the adductor canal?
Femoral artery which exit the canal-> popliteal artery
Femoral vein which exit the canal-> popliteal vein
Sapphenous nerve
Adductor canal ends at the adductor hiatus, which is the space between the adductor Magnus attachment to the adductor tubercle of femur for the popliteal vessels to travel through.
