Magnesium sulphate
Inhibits acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction for striated muscle and inhibits Ca2+ for smooth muscle relaxation. It is given for asthma and pre-eclampsia. Cannot be given for bowel evacuation and results in bone demineralisation.
Labetolol
Beta blocker for vasodilation and decreased vascular resistance given for hypertension in pregnancy. Results in bradycardia and erectile dysfunction. Cannot be given for asthma, hypotension and metabolic acidosis.
Methyldopa
Anti-hypertensive which is a sympatholytic that stimulates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors for inhibition of peripheral adrenergic outflow and causes vasodilation and angioedema. Cannot be given for pheochromocytoma and acute porphyria.
Sodium valproate
Anti-convulsant which inhibits GABA and a pathway for neural plasticity. CANNOT be given for women and girls with child-bearing potential. Side effects include headache and deafness.
Oxytocin
Given to induce labour, for C-section and prevent postpartum haemorrhage by increasing contractility of the myometrium. Cannot be given for foetal distress or uterine scar or severe cardiovascular disease. Can lead to arrythmias, nausea and vomiting.
Flucloxacillin
Pencillin beta-lactam antibiotic for bacterial cell wall synthesis. This is given for cellulitis and otitis externa which causes diarrhoea and thrombocytopenia
