When should a child with strabismus be referred to a specialist service?
If there are red flags: limited abduction, double vision, headaches, nystagmus
What is the correction for refractive error in strabismus?
Corrective glasses
What therapies are used to treat amblyopia in strabismus?
Occlusion or penalisation therapy
What does occlusion therapy involve?
Occlusion of the normal eye with a patch for a number of hours per day depending on age and severity
What does penalisation therapy involve?
Vision in the normal eye is deliberately blurred by using atropine drops, used when there is problematic compliance to occlusion
What other treatments can be used for strabismus?
Eye exercises, extraocular muscle surgery, botulinum toxin injections
