What should be done for all children suspected of having malaria?
Arrange immediate admission for specialist assessment and treatment.
What should be done if a child with malaria is already in the hospital?
Discuss urgently with an infectious disease specialist.
What is the management for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria?
Artemisinin combination therapy (such as artemether with lumefantrine or artenimol with piperaquine phosphate), or chloroquine/hydroxychloroquine if infection is from a chloroquine-sensitive region.
What is the second line treatment for uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria?
Quinine, usually given with an antibiotic.
What is the management for severe P. falciparum malaria?
Parenteral artesunate then switch to oral artemisinin combination therapy after at least 24 hours, supportive care +/- intensive care.
What is the management for non-Falciparum malaria (Plasmodium vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, P. knowlesi)?
Artemisinin combination therapy (such as artemether with lumefantrine) or chloroquine.
Who should be notified of all malaria cases?
Notify the local Health Protection Team (HPT) / Public Health England (now called UKHSA).
