Respiratory Distress Syndrome _flashcards
What is the prophylaxis for Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)?
Antenatal steroids are given to mothers with suspected or confirmed pre-term labour.
How do antenatal steroids help in preventing RDS?
They increase the production of surfactant, which reduces the incidence and severity of respiratory distress syndrome.
What is the initial management for RDS?
ABC resuscitation, review history and examine the baby to identify the cause of respiratory distress.
What respiratory support is provided for RDS?
Intubation and ventilation for severe RDS, endotracheal surfactant, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), supplementary oxygen aiming for 91-95% saturation for preterm neonates.
What additional treatments are provided for RDS?
Fluids, IV antibiotics (broad spectrum combination such as benzylpenicillin and gentamicin, or amoxicillin and gentamicin if listeria is suspected), and CXR.
When should a CXR be done for RDS?
Do ASAP unless mild respiratory distress where this can be delayed.
