What is a cutaneous dermoid cyst and where may it develop?
A cyst that may develop at sites of embryonic developmental fusion.
Where are cutaneous dermoid cysts most commonly found?
Midline of the neck, external angle of the eye, and posterior to the pinna of the ear.
What is characteristic about the inclusions in dermoid cysts?
They typically have multiple inclusions such as hair follicles that bud out from its walls.
What other sites may dermoid cysts develop and what are they synonymous with at these sites?
They may develop at other sites such as the ovary and are synonymous with teratomas.
What is a desmoid tumour and how is it classified?
A completely different entity from dermoid cysts, classified as either low grade fibrosarcomas or non aggressive fibrous tumours.
How do desmoid tumours commonly present?
As large infiltrative masses.
How are desmoid tumours divided?
Into abdominal, extra abdominal, and intra abdominal.
What is the sex distribution and primary locations for extra abdominal desmoid tumours?
Equal sex distribution, primarily arising in the musculature of the shoulder, chest wall, back, and thigh.
Where do abdominal desmoid tumours usually arise?
In the musculoaponeurotic structures of the abdominal wall.
Where do intra abdominal desmoid tumours tend to occur and in which patients are they most frequent?
In the mesentery or pelvic side walls, most frequently in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis coli syndrome.
