What is a cleft lip?
A congenital condition where there is an open section of the upper lip.
What is a cleft palate?
An opening between the mouth and the nasal cavity, a result of a defect in either the hard or soft palate.
What is the management approach for cleft lip and palate?
Cleft lip and palate MDT team, early referral required, ensure adequate nutrition, speech and language therapy input may be required long term.
What is the definitive treatment for cleft lip and palate?
Surgical correction.
When is the primary closure of the cleft lip usually made?
At 3 months.
When is the primary closure of the cleft palate done?
At 6-12 months.
How is feeding managed for babies with cleft lip and palate?
Most babies will be able to breastfeed normally, may require support with bottle feeding such as dental plates, specially shaped bottles, and teats.
