What is retinoblastoma?
The most common ocular malignancy found in children.
What is the average age of diagnosis for retinoblastoma?
18 months.
What is the pathophysiology of retinoblastoma?
It is an autosomal dominant condition caused by a loss of function of the retinoblastoma tumour suppressor gene on chromosome 13.
What percentage of retinoblastoma cases are hereditary?
Around 10%.
What is the most common presenting symptom of retinoblastoma?
Absence of red-reflex, replaced by a white pupil (leukocoria).
What are some possible features of retinoblastoma?
Leukocoria, strabismus, visual problems.
What are the management options for retinoblastoma?
Options include enucleation, external beam radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and photocoagulation.
What is the prognosis for retinoblastoma?
Excellent, with > 90% surviving into adulthood.
