A&PII Lab 2: Blood - Histology Flashcards
Plasma
fluid ground substance in blood; clear, slightly yellow, watery material; 91.5% water, 8.5% solutes
Formed elements
cells and fragments in the blood
Red blood cells (RBCs)
erythrocytes; carry the iron-containing protein hemoglobin
White blood cells (WBCs)
leukocytes; less abundant than RBCs, play a primary role in immunity
Platelets
thrombocytes; fragments of cells; participate in hemostasis (stoppage of blood loss from the circulatory system)
Hemoglobin
large protein that contains binding sites for oxygen and carbon dioxide; has a pigment (heme) that glows red when oxygen binds with its iron atom
Diapedesis
the presence of leukocytes outside of the cardiovascular system is due to their ability to move across the walls of blood vessels, which is known as this
Granulocytes
cytoplasmic particles with stainable granules; includes neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils
Agranulocytes
cytoplasmic particles that lack stainable granules; includes monocytes and lymphocytes
Neutrophils
granulocyte; 55-60% of WBC’s; cytoplasm stains pink in neutral strain; nucleus has lobes; fx = phagocytic removal of foreign particles and damaged cells
Eosinophils
granulocyte; 1-4% of WBC’s; cytoplasm stains red in acid stain; nucleus has 2 lobes; fx = phagocytic removal of allergens, parasites, and worms
Basophils
granulocyte; 0.5% or less of WBC’s; cytoplasm stains blue in a basic stain; nucleus often S-shaped; promotes inflammation by the secretion of histamines
Monocytes
agranulocyte; 3-8% of WBC’s; largest in size with round, oval, or lobed nucleus; fx= active phagocytic removal of large foreign particles and damaged cells
Lymphocytes
agranulocyte; 25-33% of WBC’s; slightly larger than RBC’s, with a large, round nucleus; fx = produced antibodies for the removal of toxins and viruses
T cells
lymphocytes that mature in the thymus; orchestrate an attach on unwanted substances
