a. Physical description: Medallion.
b. Posthumously awarded to members who lost their lives while performing their official duties under honorable and noble circumstances, such as during an adversarial confrontation with a suspect or while taking immediate action to save the life or lives of others. This award is presented to the family of the recipient and may be given in addition to other relevant awards for making the ultimate sacrifice for his community. Upon receipt of this award, recipients’ vehicle number and identification number shall be retired.

The act performed by partnering law enforcement officials must have occurred in Duval County or while assisting a member of JSO.

Purple Heart

b. Awarded to members or partnering law enforcement officials (need approval from agency’s chain of command) whose intervention in a life-threatening situation directly results in the saving of a human life. Documentation that corroborates the lifesaving action, such as witness statements or medical opinions, is required for the consideration of this award. The act performed by partnering law enforcement officials must have occurred in Duval County or while assisting a member of JSO.
c. Nomination(s) are reviewed by the Meritorious Awards Review Board.
Lifesaving Medal

b. Awarded to members (through the rank of lieutenant or civilian equivalence) by the three Peer Achievement Boards for exceptional achievements within their designated classification that rise well above the normal duties, responsibilities, and expectations for that position. This award went into effect January 2016 and is not backdated.

The Meritorious Awards Review Board is responsible for selecting recipients of the monthly employee awards (after being vetted by the Peer Achievement Boards), the annual employee awards (subject to final approval by the Sheriff and Undersheriff), meritorious medals, certificates of commendation, and certificates of appreciation. The Board reserves the right to review nomination(s) in one category.
2. Member Composition:
a. Director of Personnel & Professional Standards (Chairperson);
b. Chief of Professional Standards (Vice Chairperson);
c. All division chiefs; and
d. Public Relations Executive (non-voting consultant/Awards Coordinator).
- The Police Peer Achievement Board, Corrections Peer Achievement Board, and Civilian Peer Achievement Board are responsible for:
a. Reviewing all monthly award nominations and submitting finalists to the Meritorious Awards Board for consideration;b. Selecting the recipients of the Peer Achievement Awards; and
c. Identifying nominations that should be considered for a Letter of Commendation by the member’s chain of command.
Member Composition
a. The three Boards are each composed of ……………………… from the respective job classification, as well as a staff designee who serves as the Board Chairperson.
b. A request to apply to sit on the Board is issued annually. The ………………………………selects the staff designee (chairperson) and board members to serve January – December each year. Prospective members must not have received any discipline within the last year and must make a one-year commitment to serve on the Board.
3. The chairperson for each of the three Peer Achievement Boards facilitates the monthly meetings to ensure all nominations are reviewed and considered. The chairperson only votes for a nomination in the event of a tie.
4. Employee of the Month and Peer Achievement awards are reviewed by the respective Peer Board two months in advance of an awards ceremony.
