A Violent Crime Unit detective will be requested to respond to the scene 24 hours a day for the following incidents:

A
  1. Aggravated batteries resulting from the discharge of a firearm;
  2. Aggravated assaults with a firearm discharge and a suspect is in custody;3. Aggravated assault involving a police officer with a discharge of a firearm by suspect only. If a police officer is shot or discharges a firearm at a suspect, the Homicide/Cold Case Unit will be called out to investigate;
  3. Shootings into occupied dwellings or conveyances and a suspect is in custody;
  4. Any unique circumstances involving the discharge of a firearm (incidents involving multiple victims, incidents occurring at a special event, victims under 15 years old, etc.) or at the request of a patrol supervisor after consultation with and approval of the Supervisor of Violent Crime or the Commanding Officer of Violent Crime Unit;
  5. Accidental discharge of a firearm with a person shot;
  6. Incidents that appear to be gang-related or cases that are part of a pattern, series, or trend;
  7. Patrol follow-up investigations of aggravated assaults with a firearm discharge, shootings into an occupied dwelling, or shootings into an occupied vehicle; and
  8. Any other incident as directed by the Violent Crime Unit Sergeant or Commanding Officer of Violent Crime Unit.

Patrol officers’ duties at the scene of an aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm, aggravated assault involving the discharge of a firearm, shooting into an occupied dwelling or conveyance are as follows:

  1. Ensure the victim has received medical treatment, as necessary;
  2. Protect evidence at the scene during the initial patrol response;
  3. Locate and identify any victims, witnesses, and potential suspects;
  4. Establish an inner and outer perimeter for evidence protection and to provide an investigative work area;
  5. Maintain perimeter security of the crime scene;
  6. If a residence or building has been shot, conduct a check to ensure all of the occupants are accounted for and were not struck; and
  7. Assist the detectives upon request or as needed.

Patrol supervisors’ duties at the scene of an aggravated battery involving the discharge of firearm, aggravated assault involving the discharge of a firearm, shooting into an occupied dwelling or conveyance are as follows:

and 7. Ensure all Major Case Addendums are completed and approved before ……………………………

  1. Ensure the above patrol officer’s duties are carried out;
  2. Ensure a patrol officer responds with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) to the hospital whenever a victim is transported;
  3. Contact the Investigative PECO to request the Violent Crime Unit respond;
  4. Provide additional resources as needed for the patrol officers and detectives;
  5. Ensure responding patrol officers conducted a check of the immediate area to ensure no one was struck by gunfire;
  6. If a suspect is in custody for an aggravated assault with a discharge of a firearm, contact the Investigative PECO to request Violent Crime Unit personnel to respond. If no suspect is in custody, ensure the primary patrol officer assumes the lead role in the investigation and is responsible for all follow-up; and

Ensure all Major Case Addendums are completed and approved beforethe end of the shift.
