Hazardous Materials Incident Response

  1. The primary responsibility of the first officer responding to any actual or potential HMI is to assess the situation and report it to the Communications Center for dissemination to the appropriate agencies.
  2. The first officers responding to any HMI should notify their immediate supervisor.
  3. Officers should remain upwind and never approach the immediate proximity of an HMI until the material is positively identified. This includes any rescue attempt of injured persons at the scene.
