Weapons Carrying Restrictions – The following restrictions apply to the carrying of weapons:
a. In Circuit and County Courts, officers may wear their weapons unless:

A

(1) The judge in a particular case rules weapons shall not be worn. This order, if issued, would apply only to that particular trial; (2) The officer is a party in a civil case or a defendant in a criminal case; and
(3) If condition (1) applies, the officer shall leave his weapon(s) at the Court Liaison Office (lockboxes) before entering the courtroom. If condition (2) applies, the officer shall leave his weapon safely secured outside (vehicle trunk, home, etc.) of the Courthouse.
(4) JSO police officers conducting official business in the Duval County Courthouse or its courts located elsewhere may carry weapons into the facilities. Officers not on official business shall not be allowed to be armed and must proceed through the magnetometers, if applicable.

If an officer is on-duty or conducting official business (including approved off-duty assignments), all JSO issued weapons shall be in the officer’s immediate physical control or stored in accordance with safe storage techniques as outlined in this order. Every effort should be made to ensure any assigned or approved secondary weapons left in their vehicle are secured and out of plain sight from the public. If a weapon is removed from the vehicle due to unlawful means while an officer is on-duty, or operating in an off-duty capacity as mentioned above, the officer shall notify their chain of command and ensure all necessary reports are written. These cases shall be evaluated by the member’s director to determine if officer negligence was a contributing factor for the loss. If officer negligence is deemed a contributing factor, and the officer may be subject to disciplinary action, the …………….. shall forward all of the incident information to the Internal Affairs Unit for review.
