TB pharm - Exam 1B Flashcards
what class is Isoniazid (INH)
Antitubercular drug
Isoniazid MOA
Disrupts cell wall synthesis essential functions of mycobacteria
Isoniazid indication
First line TB med
Isoniazid SE
Peripheral neuropathy, hepatotoxicity, optic neuritis/visual disturbance, hyperglycemia
Isoniazid nursing considerations
BBW: increased risk of hepatitis (often given w/ vit B6)
Avoid antacids
When given with rifampin, can increase CNS & hepatotoxicity
If given w/ phenytoin, can increase phenytoin effect
Rifampin MOA
Inhibits protein synthesis via attacking the hydrocarbon ring structure
what class is Rifampin
Antitubercular drug
Rifampin indications
Mycobacterial infections
meningitis, HIV
Rifampin SE
Hepatitis, hematologic disorders, red/brown discoloration of the urine & other body fluids
Rifampin nursing considerations
Lots of drug-drug interaction so consult HCP & pharm before taking (may need to increase dose of the other meds)
what class is Ethambutol
Antitubercular drug
Ethambutol MOA
Diffusing into the mycobacteria and suppresses RNA synthesis, which inhibits protein synthesis
Ethambutol indication
First line bacteriostatic
Ethambutol SE
Retrobulbar neuritis
Blindness
Ethambutol nursing consideration
Usually given in combo with INH and rifampin
Not for children <13 yrs
