culture & sensitivity
cytology
acid fast bacillus
….looks for
bacteria
cancer cells (lung)
TB
teaching points for xray
-remove all metals
-3 views: PA & lateral
teaching for a CT
we will be taking a cross section view, you will lay on a hard table that brings you into the machine that makes a loud clicking sounds (we can offer sedation if needed). We may push contrast and if we do you will feel a warm flush
what needs to be monitored/assessed w/ CT contrast
-kidney function (look at bun/creatinine)
-shellfish allergy / iodine
-lots of fluids after
MRI assesses what
lesions and distinguishes vascular vs non vascular
what is our preferred scan for lung images
CT
PET scans look at
physiology and function, cancer
bronchoscope: pre nursing care
-sign consent
-NPO 6 to 12 hrs
-give sedative
bronchoscope: post nursing care
-npo until return of gag reflex
-blood tinged mucus is an expected finding
-if biopsy is done, monitor for hemorrhage or pneumothorax
when is a thoracentesis performed
when pt has a pleural effusion
pleural effusion affect on the respiration
the fluid impacts the surface area used in oxygen delivery causing impaired gas exchange
thoracentesis: pre nursing care
-consent
-position pt w/ elbows on overhead table to open intercostal space
-instruct not to talk
thoracentesis: post nursing care
-CRX per order
-assess for hypoxia and pneumothorax
if my patient has epistaxis, what is my first question
are you on anti coags
