~antidote: deferoxamine/ desferal is drug given to treat iron toxicity (chelating agent)

-if liquid, straw

BBW: have epi available for possible allergic reaction

B12 replacement
Cyanocobalamin MOA
Replenish B12 levels in the body
Cyanocobalamin indication
Low B12 levels
Bariatric surgery / surgeries that removed part of the stomach
Cyanocobalamin SE
pain or redness at injection site if using IM
Cyanocobalamin nursing considerations
Increase dietary intake of B12 (meat, fish, eggs, milk)
If injectable, 1x/wk then go to monthly after levels improve
what class is Folic acid supplement
folic acid
Folic acid supplement MOA
Replenish folic acid in the body
Folic acid supplement indication
To treat folic acid deficiency anemia,
Pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects
Folic acid supplement SE
Well tolerated but can mask a B12 deficiency
Folic acid supplement nursing consideration
Increased dietary intake of folic acid (fortified grains, fresh fruits & vegs)
Recommended dose OTC= 400 mcg
what class is Epoetin alfa
Erythropoietin stimulating agents
Epoetin alfa MOA
Stimulates erythropoiesis which then increases hemoglobin and reticulocyte counts
Epoetin alfa indications
Only indicated when hemoglobin is less than 10g/dL unless on dialysis
Epoetin alfa SE
HTN, serious CV events, progression of certain cancers, injection site problems, bone pain, headache
Epoetin alfa nursing considerations
BBW: not for HB over 10
Need adequate bone marrow function and iron levels (only for kidney issues)
Contraindicated for pt w/ high BP
Blood tests weekly (goal HB <11 to decrease clotting risk)
Usually need iron supplementation
Do not give if it has been shaken or frozen + protect from light
