Condition in which there is anemia with evidence of iron deficiency
Iron deficiency anemia
Caused by iron loss through GI bleeding or menstruation; causes weakness and fatigue; treated by iron supplementation
Disorders caused by impaired DNA synthesis; Red blood cells tend to be large and contain an increased ratio of RNA to DNA
Megaloblastic anemia
Due to deficiency in Vitamin B12 and/or folic acid
A reduction in circulating red blood cells that is caused by pathological conditions that accelerate destruction of red blood cells
Hemolytic anemia
Caused by inherited abnormalities; produces increased serum levels of bilirubin that degrades heme; treated by splenectomy
An inherited bleeding disorder that is most often diagnosed in adulthood; causes a defect in the adhesion of platelets
Von Willebrand Disease
Caused by deficiency of of vWF carrying factor VIII; causes frequent bruising, nosebleeds,, heavy menstruation; treated by medications and lifestyle changes
