TB Foam Flashcards
Low expansion foams are useful on _
Fires & spills involving flammable & combustible liquids
High expansion foams are useful on _
Class “A” combustible materials on areas inaccessible to FF’s (cellars & ship holds)
Are Hi-Ex foams suitable for use on outdoor flammable liquid fires?
Not suitable
Can different types of foam concentrate be mixed for storage
Foam concentrates are NOT compatible & Never mixed for storage
Can finished foam be mixed at incidents?
Low expansion finished foam- Yes
Finished FF Foam is lighter than fuels that they are placed on & float on surface of fuel. This results in 4 methods of extinguishment
Smothers, Suppresses, Separates, Cools
_ foam provides slow draining, stable blanket that resists breakdown caused as a result of water application & radiant heat. This makes it superior in preventing re-ignition & burn back
Fluroprotein- also adheres to metal surfaces
_ foam is suitable for polar solvent fuels (alcohols, ketones)
Can fluroprotein foam be generated with salt water
Alcohol resistant foam (fluropolydol)
Yes
Fluropolydol foam is used at different % rates. What are they?
3% rate for hydrocarbons & 6% rate for polar solvents. Fluropolydol is also the preferred foam to use if entry into a pool of fuel must be made- continuously applied to back of FF’s knees
_ is NOT suitable for polar solvents & should be restricted to hydrocarbon fuels which do not contain any polar additives. Excellent for jet fuel, fuel oil, & kerosene
AFFF- has trouble sealing against hot metal tank surfaces
Foam concentrate ID colors for Fluroprotein, Alcohol, Hi-Ex & AFFF
Fluroprotein Brown,
Alcohol Green,
Hi-Ex Yellow,
AFFF Black
The premixing of fluroprotein foam solution can be accomplished by dumping _ five gal cans of concentrate into a 500 gal booster to produce _ % solution. The pumper (shall/shall not) be connected to a hydrant
Three,
3 %,
Should NOT- back-pressure in foam line could force foam solution into domestic water supply
HL noz used with eductors are useful for small operations such as a spill approximately _’
approx 600 sq feet
Foam carriers are used for medium sized spills such as a spill over _’, a tanker truck mishap, or loading rack spill
Medium ops over 600’ sq ft- 2000 sq ft
Master stream operations are used at largest type ops such as oil tank farms or large spills over _’
Over 2000 sq feet
1st alarm units will supply how much foam concentrate
Ladders are req’d to carry at least two 5 gal cans of Fluroprotein concentrate & Eng are req’d to carry at least three 5 gal cans. 3E & 2L will provide at least 65 gal of foam concentrate & up to 3 foam HL
Foam eductor flow between - GPM
95 & 120 GPM
When is a 10-86 transmitted?
If the incident requires foam that is beyond the 1st alarm assignment capability
Can you start a foam attack while awaiting for additional concentrate to arrive?
Must have enough foam concentrate on hand before any operations started. If fire is NOT extinguished it will burn back & used concentrate will be wasted
New tankers are constructed w/_ shell & can carry over 14,000 gal; Older tankers have a _ tank & carry 3000-4000 gallons
Aluminum;
Steel
Can we attempt to upright a loaded vehicle
A vehicle that has rolled onto its side must be off-loaded. Never attempt to upright a loaded vehicle
Which tanks BLEVE: older ones or newer ones?
Both can BLEVE but newer models it is reduced due to aluminum melting at 1220 F. Both require LCS on vapor area quickly
